Cleaning up your online storage

One of the nice things about Data Deposit Box is that your backups are never deleted. With a lot of backup tools, old backups are eventually recycled. So if you delete something by mistake and wait a few months, there is no way to get it back.

When something is backed up with DDB, it lives in your online storage forever until you delete it. It will never expire or be automatically deleted. As useful as this feature is, it means you have to clean up your storage once in a while to avoid storing things you don't want.

One way to clean up is just to log into the web site and delete things you no longer need. But what if you don't know what what you no longer need. Or you just have so much stuff that cleaning up is just too much work.

To make your life easier we created the Clean-Up Wizard. Clicking the "Clean Up" button in the backup software will analyze your online storage and compare it to what you have currently on your PC. It will then suggest a list of things that are no longer on your PC and give you the opportunity to delete them. This is substantially easier than going through your folders one by one.

Easy Folder Selection Feature

In order to back up your data, you need to first identify where the data is located. Data Deposit Box makes this easy. When you install the software, it will automatically detect some popular locations like My Documents, Outlook, Outlook Express, Desktop, and Favorites.

This is important because most people don't really know where these things are kept. I know you know how to find your Outlook email. But could you find the Outlook.pst data file? Well actually it's in something like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Peter Carroll\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

If that wasn't hard enough, "Local Settings" is a hidden folder. That means even if you knew where it was you would still not be able to see it by default. In Explorer you first need to choose "Tools - Folder Options - View" and check "Show hidden files and folders".

The great thing with Data Deposit Box is you don't need to know all this. If you goal is to backup Outlook, In our software you simply click Options, Folders, then select Outlook from the list. The software will show you where your Outlook is located and you can just check it off.

If you are an IT consultant you may not need this feature. But if you are a normal everyday computer user, this might make all the difference.
